Fred Liebel, an Insurance professional is our guest and keynote speaker this
evening. His information for any small business or self employed
Consultant is invaluable and really, a must.

Fred presented at SMBTN San Diego a few months ago and everyone agreed how
interesting and beneficial the presentation was. His company offers
comprehensive custom commercial insurance packages.
He discusses in applicable detail the laws covering liability, workman's comp,
independent contractor definitions per California Law. At the SMBTN
meeting most of the consultants learned how many of their concepts in these
areas were wrong. And just how much issues in these areas could affect
their own financial assets and well being.
Fellow member Rick Joyce will give us a hands-on
demonstration of how he utilizes Virtualization to run his own very successful
consulting practice.

Topic: Malware Detection and Prevention by John Bisaillon (Systems
Computer Training)
Case Study: Steel Bolt Hacking, Physical Security Attacks and
Counters for the Small Business Computer Consultant by Erik Pfeiffer (Silver
Ace Consulting)
Malicious software or malware, can be used in many different ways, from
transferring files to sending out spam to keylogging to sniffing network
traffic. Since there is a multitude of ways that malware can be distributed
(free download sites, physical media, web browser vulnerabilities, etc.) it is
not uncommon for your computer to be exposed to this threat. This presentation
will explain how to manually detect and remove malware using free tools. Actual
demonstrations will be performed with the software using virtual machines. The
presentation will conclude by discussing recommended strategies for Malware
prevention.
John Bisaillon is a Technical Instructor for Systems Computer Training, Inc.,
of Carlsbad, CA. John is Systems’ chief security instructor and has developed a
comprehensive series of hands-on security courses.
Before coming to Systems, he performed a mixture of systems administration
and consulting work. John had traveled the country teaching Microsoft and
security courses for two different nationwide training companies. He edited the
computer networking book "TCP/IP on Windows NT Illustrated" (McGraw-Hill)./ /He
also co-developed several Windows 2003/ 2000 courses for a local university,
where he achieved the awarded */"Instructor of the Quarter"./* John has achieved
the certifications: CISSP, SCNP, MCSE (2003/2000/NT), CCNA, CEH, Security +,
Network +, A+, MCT. He also obtained Masters and Bachelors degrees in

October 5, 2006 - Topic: Nagios by Tony Su (also
available via Office Live Meeting)
Case Study: SMB Nation 2006 Recap by Rick Joyce
Recommend downloading the README for the GroundworkOpensource/Nagios
VMware VM from my website
That one document is practically a complete HOW-TO I wrote up
for any Windows Admin who is interested in deploying Nagios to
monitor Windows boxes...
What is Nagios?
It's a Network Monitoring system. It is extremely versatile,
people have used it to monitor *NIX, Mac, routers, switches,
building environmentals... and yes, Windows.
Is this new, unproven technology?
It's been around for about 7 years now.
How much does it cost?
Nada. Zilch.
So, why haven't I heard of it before?
If
you're a Windows SysAdmin, Nagios hasn't been for you. Even
today, it can be installed only on Linux. Most Windows SysAdmins
don't feel comfortable learning and installing something they
may still not understand well.
So, why Nagios now... and especially for SBS?
My
invention is to create a Software Appliance which is almost as
easy to deploy as a hardware appliance like a Sonicwall (which
BTW runs Linux). Although others have written similar Software
Appliances with other features like a fully automated install
and web management, I felt that the most flexible and versatile
deployment still requires access through the OS, so I built on
SuSE 10.0. Not to worry, the "GWK INFO.txt" file linked above
should be <everything> you need to fine tune your deployment
once. After that, Nagios is accessible through one of the best
web interfaces written, GroundworkOpensource.
How do I get setup?
All
distributions are through the TORRENT network. Although still
relatively unused by Windows SysAdmins, the TORRENT network is
widely used by Open Source to freely distribute legitimate
software efficiently. Many Anti-Virus recognize the common use
of peer to peer network file sharing and will automatically scan
any downloads.
The Downloads
Download and install some version of VMware. I recommend
Workstation, Server or ESX, but Player and GSX will work, too.
Download the VM "software hard drive" using one of the following
torrent files
The
Faster Download
Multiple seeders means faster downloads, but does not include
the VMX configuration file necessary to run in Player.
You
should also download the following
The
Newer Download (a complete package)
Includes the VMX configuration file and the NSclient app.
The WINSUG Meeting
So
now the meeting announcement... and I left it to the end. That's
because for any of you who aren't able to attend in person or by
LiveMeeting, I'll make the Presentation Slides available to all
after any modifications if there are pertinent Q&A that come up
during the meeting.
The
first half hour or so will be an ordinary slide presentation to
introduce the idea of a Software Appliance and deploying Virtual
Machines.
The
remainder of the meeting will be a rather ambitious Installfest
for anyone who wishes to participate, but to participate you
will need to prepare....
Attending in person:
Laptop with 3GB of free space after installing a VMware
application.
I
encourage downloading the files listed above, but a few DVDs
will be available to share and transfer files.
There <may> be a WiFi connection, but transferring hundreds of
megabytes if not gigabytes wirelessly all at once can be slow.
Attending via LiveMeeting:
Either have a Windows machine with 3GB of free space or be able
to remote into your machine with similar free space.
Install VMware beforehand
Download the files listed above.
Additional preparation recommendation:
Read the GWK NFO to familiarize yourself with what you may need
to do.
Create a small VMware VM beforehand.
See
you at WINSUG!

create a new bootable CD to hack a local box. He will create the CD, load
tools and then run it against a system. This will be done to change
passwords, copy files, and also remove viruses and Malware. He will also
demonstrate how to audit hidden data.
This presentation will be focused on providing practical tools
for IT consultants. Erik wants attendees to be able to use this tool in
their ongoing business practice, not just watch him stand up in front trying to
look cool. He will have 15 copies to give away for free, with the ISO
image available if we need to burn more onsite.
BIO: Erik Pfeiffer is the owner of

Topic: Everything You Should Know About Licensing by Jocelin
Arakawa
Case Study: Anonymity on the Internet by Erik Pfeiffer
This was
presented at Coleman College with Jocelin joining us via Office Live Meeting.
She focused on the Open License programs, the differences and the offerings for
each flavor. She also added a short delivery on CAL licensing, a topic
that frequently comes up as an unclear point.
Jocelin
Arakawa, Licensing Specialist - SMS&P West Region, SoCal has the primary role to
assist with a licensing program solution that would meet the customer's needs.
She is conversant on the program and product licensing however she adds the
caveat that in some configurations, Microsoft's technology provides some
licensing challenges even for Licensing Specialists.
BIO:
Jocelin has been with Microsoft for nearly 10 years in a variety of roles,
primarily in the Sales organization. She has been in her current role of
Licensing Specialist for two years. As a Licensing Specialist she comes
into contact with a multitude of individuals, customers and Partners of all
kinds. Her area of expertise lies in the Microsoft licensing programs
and aligning the customer with the most appropriate program. Her
tenure at Microsoft has allowed her to experience the changes in both products
and programs, a most interesting journey.
She
currently lives in a very small town in Western Washington amidst cows and
horses, quite a change from the sunny shores of her birthplace in Hawaii.
Raised and married in Hawaii, then moving to the "mainland" to experience the

WiNSUG Anniversary Party plus... Small Business Spotlight (or 'So You
Want to be a Consultant?')
We celebrated our official one year anniversary with food and friends.
It was a bit of a potluck event with the dish from Rubio's Fresh Mexican
Grill. We even had a specially made cake during our break!
We had a short presentation on Pre-Paid Legal Services (www.prepaidlegal.com)
by Elaine White, a San Diego based attorney followed by the keynote
presentation which included a panel presentation/discussion on
consulting businesses that are up and running. We all had an
opportunity to learn from others in the field working to manage their
business and continuing to grow in this competitive environment.
The panel included an independent consultant: John Rubino (www.rubinonet.net),
a general partner: Michael Brunson (www.nctg.com),
and Jeff Adzima: a corporation (www.lasrlink.com).
Our own Paula Mellon (aka Barbra Walters) moderated and kept
everyone focused on the topic.
The
informal after meeting discussions in lots of small groups continued for
quite sometime and it was great to see everyone having a good time and
looking forward to our next year.

Mobility in SBS 2003 - Exchange ActiveSync
Find out how to utilize Exchange 2003 features to get email on mobile
devices. Presenter Ofer Shimrat showed us how it can be done as
well as what works and what doesn't. Here was an opportunity to
learn from a pro who has direct experience.
Click here for the online viewing of the PPT. Click on 'Slide
Show' in the lower right hand corner to see it with animation (cool).

BIO:
Ofer Shimrat has been developing database applications for a variety of
industries including hospitality, event production, medical research,
construction and engineering since 1991. During deployment of these
applications in networked environments it quickly became clear to Ofer
that not all networks are designed and built the same - that is, some
network administrators are better than others. As a result, in early
2000, Ofer plunged into the networking world, and utilizing rigorous
database modeling approaches, learned to take advantage of the many
features currently available with network technologies. When properly
designed and implemented, current hardware and software technologies
afford the very fastest throughput and performance that is critical for
reliable and scalable database deployment and operations across the
network. Now in 2005, with a solid background of both database and
networking, Ofer is uniquely positioned to tackle productivity
challenges for his clientele with a more robust overview to make it all
happen. For contact information go to

Microsoft
This was the third of a special three meeting series on backup & restore
technologies and methodologies. Our presenter, Paul Fitzgerald is
the Microsoft SBS Backup Program Manager. This meeting was
presented via Microsoft Office Live Meeting. If you work with
Small Business Server this is a meeting you shouldn't have missed.
Here's the PPT if you want to check it out.
BIO: "I was on the original team that was created back in 1995
to understand if a server product could be built that would be
viable for small businesses. It was a pet project of Steve
Ballmer's. It was clear that he saw the potential for the company
plus a real need for small businesses. After joining the team I
quickly learned that he was right.
My initial focus was testing. I owned all testing of SBS 4.0 and had
a team of 5 people. As the product and team grew I focused on
platform integration (getting the server applications to run when
installed on the same server). I also owned all network related
testing.
I am the oldest member of the SBS team and the only one left from
the original team. I was answering newsgroup posts back in 1996 and
met a lot of great people on the way.. a few of them are SBS MVPs
today.
During the SBS 2003 cycle I was asked to move to Program Management
to work on some of the client setup issues. I now own backup/restore
and migration. I am a huge fan of our partners and the new
community work we are doing.
We need the partners to help us define the next generation of SBS
products."
We also had a presentation by Tony Su on Password Security.
He covered topics such as brute force cracking possibilities, cracking
dictionaries, security of the passphrase and the effectiveness of
password policy. Tony is very active in the networking community
and is Architect of the Revolutionary Enterprise PDA and Mobile Phone
Foundation, extending Line of Business to the Mobile Workforce!
His site is located at
http://www.su-networking.com/. You can go there, create an
account, login and download the PPT files under Whitepapers (link at top
of page) titled "A Practical Approach to Password Construction".

Network scenarios, various servers topologies, multi site etc.

Swing It!
You may have heard about it, now you can learn about it! Karen
Christian and Michael Brunson will presented the overview and detailed
process review of the Swing Migration as developed by Jeff Middleton (www.sbsmigration.com)
on Thursday, November 4. With two production client 'swings' under
their belt (so far) and another scheduled in mid-November 2004, this
will be an opportunity to learn all about the techniques that are
employed. The actual 'production swing' experiences so far has
been from SBS 2000 to SBS 2003 using the original server hardware.
The next swing will be to new server hardware. Rick Joyce will be
available to add his take from his observations of the process also.
If you're considering upgrades on servers for small businesses somewhere
in the future, finding out what this is, how it works and the pros and
cons of other methods is definitely worthwhile. The process can be
applied to Windows NT, SBS 4.x, SBS 2000, SBS 2003, Windows Server 2000,
Windows Server 2003, and various versions of Exchange.

FBI Presentation
We had a great meeting on Thursday, October 7 which included a
presentation by two Special Agents from the San Diego FBI office.
Lori Jensen and Chris Nelson are with the Computer Crime Squad and we
look forward to an interesting and informative evening. The topics
will cover the general workings of the FBI, a special program called
'InfraGard' (guarding the infrastructure,
http://www.infragard.net/) and an explanation and discussion about
the various types of computer crimes in the area. This will be
supportive of the work we do to help our businesses remain safe and
secure. As business owners look to us (their IT support staff -
in-house or outsourced) for all things computer related, we need to be
prepared for the possibility that we will need a solid understanding of
the current landscape and legal process.
The meeting was very interesting, entertaining (Chris sure loves those
aerial shots) and made everyone think (where do they keep their guns?).
We all learned something :)

SharePoint
Todd Rowe was the presenter at the September 2 meeting. He covered
SharePoint Portal Server and Windows SharePoint Services. His
presentation was well received and there was clearly more material that
could have been covered beyond the 2 1/2 hours that evening. I'm
sure everyone there will agree that we want to invite him back in the
future for more on one of the several products in which he specializes
(and there are many as we found out). As a bonus, there were 3
copies of Windows 2003 Server (NFR) given away too. Whether you
were brand new to SharePoint or had some tougher technical questions
regarding the products, Todd sent everyone home with knowledge and
exposure to these awesome products that make us all want to jump in,
implement and sing the virtues of the amazing features and how they will
support our businesses and our clientele.
